Matthew Von Doran has an easy listening tone on the guitar. However, his lazy sound should not lure listeners into thinking this is a sleepy date, for the music grooves in its own way, ranging from light fusion and post-bop to some swinging sections. A great deal of inner fire is expressed along the way. There are spots for the tenors of Bob Mintzer and Bob Sheppard and some for the other sidemen, but guitarist Von Doran is the star throughout and he rises to the occasion. Of course, it is not surprising that he knows the material well, for he composed all ten songs. While none of the tunes are probably destined to become standards, they work well on this set, as does the constant changing of personnel and instrumentation. Matthew Von Doran, who is versatile and subtle, deserves to be much better known.
