On ILLEGAL BUSINESS 2000, Jamal Rocker (aka Mac Mall) proudly carries on in the tradition of West Coast gansta rap. Following in the footsteps of such hardcore California titans as Ice Cube, Mac Mall navigates the familiar formula of street-smart rhymes, pulsing beats, horror-theme loops, and carnival-esque keyboard samples with appropriate bravado and gusto.

Skits in the form of news segments, conversations between criminals, and exchanges between friends on the street stay true to the hip-hop code of between-song entertainment. Mall takes a break from grinding backing-tracks with the reggae-flavored "Rude Boy" and diverges from tales of police evasion and hard-living with the romance-minded "Wide Open" and "Pussy Whipped" (a love song of a more specific sort), lending some variety to a record firmly entrenched in the rap verities.
