As a multi-generational, multi-genre compilation intended for an audience outside the United States -- to whom all American popular music is unified on some level -- this is a neat little 21-song compilation from Japanese MCA. The artists range from Debbie Reynolds singing "Tammy" and Jerry Lewis doing "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody" to Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton on "They Say It's Wonderful" from Annie Get Your Gun. In between are Judy Garland, Gloria DeHaven, Marlene Dietrich ("You Go To My Head"), Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest ("Long Ago (And Far Away)"), and Bing Crosby, both solo and teamed with Mitzi Gaynor (on "You're the Top"), plus Hoagy Carmichael doing his own "Stardust." The mastering is impeccable and the annotation is presumably very thorough though, of course, in Japanese.
