The great Johnny Carson has had a incredible array of talent on his show, and this two-record set showcases the highlights from the first 20 years. There are some great comedy moments, but the highlights are mostly musical. There is one wonderful section on the record called "Ladies Sing the Blues," which features performances by Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, and Aretha Franklin. Holiday's "Them Their Eyes" is absolutely magnificent, and showcases the singer in all of her bluesy, swinging glory. Following a brassy performance from Garland ("The Man that Got Away"), Franklin performs an excellent version of "Till You Come Back to Me." Unfortunately, the Holiday and Franklin portions suffer from some awful sound quality, but the performances are incredible. Comedy sketches by the Smothers Brothers and George Burns fill out the record, but Lenny Bruce blows them all away, naturally.
