AllMusic Review by

Hearts Won't Try This offers an interesting take on the sort of dramatic, angular indie rock Geezer Lake takes as its background (add a dash of metal to Archers of Loaf, and you're almost there). The record has a very jagged, deconstructive feel which could almost be seen as preferable to the polished ambition of 1996's King Frost Parade. In the end, though, both albums are equally appealing; Hearts Won't Try This lives up to the skronky rock templates from which the band draws, even if it doesn't have the inventive and unique qualities of its successor.
