A fine classic jazz/New Orleans jazz group from Vancouver, British Columbia, the Grand Dominion Jazz Band celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2002 with a pair of Stomp Off CDs. The septet members may all have white hair, but their playing and spirit are quite youthful and enthusiastic. Nearly all of the selections performed on this CD are obscure; such tunes as "Underneath Hawaiian Skies," "Roll Along Prairie Moon," "Delia's Gone," and "Short Dress Girl" were not standards even in the 1920s. The band's ensembles are joyful and the individual soloists are excellent within the genre of classic jazz. Fans of pre-swing will certainly enjoy this colorful effort.
