Singer Barbara Paris does the near-impossible on this disc, tackling a set of music dominated by veteran standards and making them sound fresh and alive. Certainly "All of Me," "He May Be Your Man" (which uses some phrases identified with Joe Williams), and "But Not for Me" have not exactly been under-recorded through the years, but Paris' subtle creativity and highly appealing phrasing (along with a strong voice), manage to give new life to these warhorses. The supporting cast (pianist Joe Bonner, bassist Kenny Walker, drummer Mike Whited, and Rich Chiaraluce on tenor, alto, and flute), although Bonner is the only one with a national reputation, are some of the best musicians based in Colorado. Highlights of the program include "Everything Happens to Me," "April in Paris," "Whisper Not," and "I Fall in Love Too Easily." This CD is easily recommended to listeners who enjoy swinging, bop-based vocalists.
