George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band always has such remarkable personnel in its tours, mixing together some of the top adventurous American and European musicians. For this CD, the soloists include the leader/pianist, trumpeters Kenny Wheeler, Manfred Schoof and Enrico Rava, tenors Joe Henderson and Larry Schneider, Ernst Petrowsky on soprano, Howard Johnson on tuba, trombonists Art Baron and Ray Anderson, and singer Sheila Jordan (who is heard on the title cut); heard in the ensembles but unfortunately not featured are altoist Lee Konitz and trumpeters Marvin Stamm and Franco Ambrosetti. Despite the all-star personnel, the ensembles are quite tight, the material (four originals by Gruntz, plus Henderson's "Inner Urge") is generally complex, and the band lives up to its very high potential.
