BBC Radio One DJ Andy Kershaw (once a roadie for Billy Bragg) compiled this LP of world music in an eclectic fashion similar to a typical night on his program. From roadhouse blues to Irish reels and new country to African pop, Kershaw looks for one thing -- a no-nonsense, no-pretensions approach to music, with real people and real instruments. Highlights includes Ted Hawkins' duet with Billy Bragg on the latter's "Cold and Bitter Tears," the absolute joy of the Makgona Tsohle Band's "Duba Duba," and the infectious R&B stomp of "Walkin' With Barrence" by Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. Also included are rare tracks by Dwight Yoakam, Steve Phillips, and the long-missed Senegalese/Cuban son mix-up band Orchestra Baobab.
