From 1972-1977, Marc Bolan wrote an astonishing amount of non-album B-sides for his singles, which are all collected together for the first time on Great Hits 1972-1977: The B-Sides. And while not all of the tracks are winners, all of the selections from T. Rex's 1972-1973 glory period are outstanding -- -- it's almost like discovering a long-lost T. Rex album. Standouts include the glam rockers "Cadillac," "Thunderwing," "Lady," "Jitterbug Love," "Sunken Rags," "Free Angel," and "Midnight," plus "Baby Strange" and "Born to Boogie" (although both appeared on T. Rex full-lengths), while a 12-second holiday greeting from Bolan entitled "Xmas Riff" can be skipped over. The album's 15 other tracks are not as consistent -- some are worthwhile ("Sitting Here," "Explosive Mouth," "Space Boss"), while others are clearly not (disco covers of "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Dock of the Bay"). Also included in the CD booklet is info on each track (date of the recording, what Bolan was trying to accomplish, etc.), making it a great collection for the serious Marc Bolan/T. Rex fan.
