The Full Moon Music set by Armen Donelian, which is subtitled Grand Ideas, Vol. 3, features the pianist playing 14 free improvisations. Much of the music is thoughtful and often out of tempo yet there is enough variety to always hold one's interest. Contrasting with the wistful and laid-back improvising is the rambunctious "Beer Drinkers Anthem." Some of the other selections display Donelian's classical background and almost sound as close to modern classical music as to jazz except for the fact that the pianist is improvising everything on the spot. The mood changes are subtle, Donelian does not completely shy away from melodies, and the development is logical if spontaneous. Full Moon Music is well worth several listens.
