There are plenty of hip-hop albums that bounce between G'd-up party tracks and sad tales of city life, but Don Trip's Godspeed LP jumps an Evel Knievel-sized chasm between the opening swagger-fest dubbed "Waiting Room" ("A staple couldn't penetrate all my paper") and the gut-wrenching follow-up titled "Eviction Notice" ("Hey momma, there's a man at the door/She say 'Don't Answer,' we say 'What For?'"). Later, the humorous and sexually explicit "Wake Up" ("I spend so much time in her mouth, I feel like her orthodontist") sits next to the politically motivated and brilliantly written "White House" ("Let's pull a home invasion on the White House" and "turn that bitch into the Carter") and while all these shifts may be jarring to the newcomer, returning Trip fans know the man is gifted enough to guide the listeners through these chicanes. Think Three 6 Mafia with less of a schtick or Murs broadcasting from the heart of the city, and the magic of Trip is at hand, plus Godspeed also comes with a guest shot from Starlito, giving this fine LP another dose of slept-on greatness.
