Hailing from New York City, Jonny Dubowsky's music doesn't sound like the typical NYC rock sound of the early 21st century. In other words, there's nothing on Dubowsky's 2006 five-track release, Get Steady (credited to Jonny Lives!), that brings to mind the Strokes or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In fact, his vocals and sense of melody makes Dubowsky sound like a long-lost brother of Rivers Cuomo at times. The album-opening party-hearty title track sounds like it would be the perfect lead-off song to some brainless teen comedy...oh wait, that's actually already happened (it's included on the Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj soundtrack). But to his credit, Dubowsky refuses to be pigeonholed to a single style, as evidenced by the jangly power pop of "Love Conspiracy," the Beach Boys-like "Lost My Mind," and the stark acoustic guitar/voice showcase "Breaking Down," which shows Dubowsky doesn't need an amped-up accompaniment to get his point across.
