David Andrews' first solo full-length (he released an EP in 1996) is a powerful shot of gritty roots rock popcraft, replete with thrilling harmonies (check out "Runnin' Away Again"), chugging grooves ("2,000 Miles"), and disarming sentiments ("I Believe," "The Wedding Song"). His overall sound is a bit ragged around the edges, but in a good way; the unfinished surfaces only accentuate the structural perfection of his songs. Andrews sings in a warm, slightly rough voice that makes it easy to miss the consistent accuracy of his intonation and the occasional complexity of his melodies, and when harmony singer Stephanie Schneiderman swoops in out of nowhere on the occasional chorus, the effect is thrilling. Highlights on this album are numerous, and include the endearing "The Little Things" and the bittersweet "Runnin' Away Again." Highly recommended.
