When Americans think of traditional German acoustic music (as opposed to contemporary German rock, techno and dance music), the first thing that comes to mind is polka and so-called "oom-pah-pah" music. But an equally important part of traditional German music are the drinking songs heard in beer halls. Beer drinking is an art and a time-honored tradition throughout Germany, and the songs heard on this CD are the songs that have been heard in the beer halls. In contrast to the danceable exuberance of polka, beer garden songs like and "Da Schleiflinger Kirchtag, " "Spinn, Spinn, Spinnerin, " "Uber D'alma" and "Der Summa Is Uma" are performed at a slow tempo. German Beer Garden Favorites does contain a few upbeat polkas (including "Volksfest Gaudi" and "Der Schneidige Jager"), but for the most part, this isn't a CD that's meant for dancing at Oktoberfest -- these are songs to sit and sing along with while sipping a Lowenbrau.
