AllMusic Review by

One of France's most beloved singers is feted here with a first-class roundup of some of his best work. Mostly just accompanying himself on guitar, Brassens is in top form on tracks culled from 1952-1966, the majority of which are done up-tempo with more than a touch of café wit to keep one entertained throughout. Brassens keeps the chanson tradition in good stead while also indulging in a bit of rustic country-folk (Stateside style) on the closing track, "Le Mercent." Francophiles need not worry, though, because Brassens' beguiling mother tongue is heard for the entire session.
