To launch their extensive Ray Charles reissue program, Rhino combined two of his jazz albums, Genius + Soul = Jazz and My Kind of Jazz. Although both records have "jazz" in their title, they are drastically different stylistically. Genius + Soul finds Charles playing Hammond organ with the Count Basie band, running through some Quincy Jones arrangements of standards like "One Mint Julep." My Kind of Jazz is a totally different experience, functioning as his stab at funky soul-jazz. Genius + Soul is a better, more consistent record than My Kind of Jazz, but the latter is quite entertaining in its own right, and by presenting the two albums together, this disc illustrates the depth and breadth of Charles' talent.
