This is a clever, witty, piercing, knowingly satirical yet wholly serious musical about gay subculture that ought to be seen by lots and lots of straight people (it would greatly lower the tension levels on the subject matter). The topical references range from Victorian England and Oscar Wilde to the AIDS era, but there's nothing beyond the knowledge of someone who's read a decent newspaper at least a few times a week. The cast is brilliant, the production is spot-on perfect, and the music is, well...not far removed from ground broken by Hair three decades earlier, but that doesn't mean it's not good -- just not daring or terribly original in approach or style. It's still a charming body of work, regardless of one's musical taste or politics.
