At the Gates' debut EP, Gardens of Grief, was recorded just four months after the legendary death metal band had formed. The sound here is a lot more elemental and unfocused than the masterworks the band would subsequently put out, but the spark of talent is clearly evident over the course of the EP's four tracks. As an added bonus, this reissue also features In the Embrace of Evil, a compilation from fellow Gothenburg death metal outfit Grotesque. With a much more traditional death sound, the inclusion of the album highlights the differences between Grotesque's grinding sonic assault and the more melodic heights that At the Gates would eventually head toward.
