Free Soul Earth is a particularly stellar entry in the long-running series. Any compilation with the taste and imagination to juxtapose Baby Huey's "Mighty, Mighty," Todd Rundgren's "I Saw the Light," and Carol Douglas' cover of ABBA's "Dancing Queen" can't help but be brilliant. Master compiler Toru Hashimoto again travels fathoms beyond the tried and true to create a seamless listen bringing together rare and underappreciated funk, fusion, and soft rock tunes spanning the continents and the decades. It's a fantastic introduction to the Free Soul series as a whole, although you'll be hard-pressed to stop at just one. Other highlights include Curtis Mayfield's "Tripping Out," Average White Band's "Let's Go Round Again," and the Blackbyrds' "Walking in Rhythm."
