It is typical of Bill Perkins' adventurous spirit that on his Interplay CD, a session on which he had complete control (including repertoire and sidemen), Perk would perform ten challenging pieces: four Frank Strazzeri originals and compositions by Mike Stern, Duke Pearson, Jimmy Heath, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, and trumpeter Clay Jenkins. A couple of the pieces are blues but, due to the tricky frameworks, this was far from a routine jam session. Perkins' tenor (he switches to baritone on "You Know I Care") blends in well with Jenkins, while the rhythm section (pianist Strazzeri, either Tom Warrington or Ken Filiano on bass, and drummer Bill Berg) benefits from the inclusion of vibraphonist Bob Leatherbarrow on four of the selections. A wide variety of moods are covered on a rather modern set that serves as an excellent showcase for Bill Perkins.
