At the time of this recording, Mzikayifani Buthelezi was among South Africa's most popular traditional vocalists. Buthelezi displays a sensual, not overly sexy sound, but can really push and pace a song. His material was topical, discussing everything from current love affairs to the problems of African nations and the inability of everyday folk to coexist in peace. The music wasn't quite as sweeping or flowing as some other South African records; instead, it was forceful, the rhythms more potent and direct, and Buthelezi's singing harsher and more energetic than soothing or captivating.
