As a club brand, Fabric has succeeded where more mainstream companies have faltered, offering up a wide variety of underground electronic music that doesn't have to rely on superstar name recognition or well-known track selection. This mix by Fabric resident Phil Sebastian has neither of these usual selling points. Instead, it offers up 70 minutes of original music performed seamlessly as a live PA by Sebastian, the relatively obscure producer who goes under the Pure Science moniker. The nice thing about this compilation is that it captures one of the better live shows in minimal techno, with Sebastian's razor-sharp drum programming leading the way for the length of the set. The unfortunate thing is that the variety of sounds and textures is kept to a minimum, with Sebastian making only subtle changes to the basic formula from beginning to end. That might be fine for the club, but a home listening set deserves a bit more room to move about. So, while the premise might be to capture the live experience on disc, the result actually suffers the biggest disadvantages of both mixed CDs and artist albums. Diversity cannot be achieved by using the work of others, or by allowing the producer to extend beyond the dancefloor mandate.
