Though the lyrics to fado songs are famously gloomy, Tina Santos sings them with a swinging style that makes them very enjoyable even for those who do not speak Portuguese. Her slightly reedy soprano is an excellent instrument, and she exhibits superb vocal control. On Era O Que Faltava she sings upbeat material with a band who plays with rare sensitivity, often playing interlocking guitar lines that have entirely different melodies from the vocal lead. The result is involving and passionate, worthy of several listens to appreciate the complexity and soulfulness of the music.
