Leave it to Pain of Salvation to complicate things whenever they can. Ending Themes on the Two Deaths of Pain on Salvation is a two-DVD live video/documentary; the DVD containing the documentary is titled Sixworlds/Eightdays: The First Death of Pain of Salvation, while the DVD that focuses on a live appearance in Amsterdam is titled Touching You Harder: The Second Death of Pain of Salvation. Would it have been easier to simply call the discs DVD 1 and DVD 2? Yes, but this is Pain of Salvation -- and things have a way of becoming complicated when Pain of Salvation are involved. But despite their excesses, Pain of Salvation have made some valuable contributions to progressive rock and progressive metal. And the Amsterdam show finds them in generally enjoyable form, performing material from albums that range from 1999's Entropia) ("Night Mist") to 2004's 12:05 ("Brickwork," "Chainsling," "Undertow") to 2007's Scarsick ("Disco Queen," "America," "Cribcaged"). The Amsterdam concert has its excesses, but again, excesses go with the territory when Pain of Salvation are involved -- and all things considered, it is an exciting show. It should be noted that different editions of Ending Themes on the Two Deaths of Pain on Salvation have been released. The main edition is strictly a two-DVD set, but there is also a limited-edition box set that contains the two DVDs as well as audio-CD versions of the Amsterdam performances -- and altogether, the box set has a total playing time of about six hours. Ending Themes on the Two Deaths of Pain of Salvation isn't recommended to casual listeners, but it's a release that will no doubt appeal to Pain of Salvation's more obsessive fans -- excesses, self-indulgence and all.
