AllMusic Review by

Concentrating largely on Rod McKuen's folk-oriented recordings, Early Harvest includes tracks going as far back as 1956 ("Colorado Trail"), although most of the material is from the '60s. A number of excellent songs are included, such as "Doesn't Anybody Know My Name" and "Rose," but some of the material suffers from the same pitfalls that beleaguer practically every McKuen collection, namely dated liberal intellectual humor, smirky pop-culture references, and assorted in-jokes. That never stops anyone from listening to Phil Ochs records, though, so Rod McKuen can be forgiven for being a product of his time. The folk theme fades by the end of the collection, which is a shame considering that McKuen easily has enough quality folk-like material in his catalog to sustain a full-length disc.
