One of the finest CDs of Takemitsu's music, performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki. "Far Calls, Coming, Far !" is scored for solo violin and orchestra. The title, a quote from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake is what Anna Livia sings out upon sighting the River Liffy meeting the sea. The music, likewise, attempts to depict a flowing river, taking winding routes, rushing or barely in motion, until it finally reaches a great C-major tonal sea. "Vers, L'Arc-En-Ciel, Palma (Verse, Rainbow, Palma)" for guitar and oboe d'amore soloists with orchestra is an homage to the painter Joan Miró whom Takemitsu met in 1970. The lovely, nostalgic music rises with orchestral imitations of rising guitar arpeggios, constantly adding more rich harmonies to the texture.
