Well, providing some twists and turns to the Jekyll/Hyde story and turning it into a comedy seems to be one solid way of approaching material grown rather creaky with age and use. This contemporary comedy update appears to have opted for broad comedy. Mark McKenzie, having done four dramatic scores prior to this, also took the comedic route, abandoning all caution in the process. The result is a very nicely done orchestral score that has moments of grand dementia, great sweeps of twisted pseudo-horror music that nod happily to older conventions of dark suspense. This is a score to thoroughly enjoy, and one that may make you laugh out loud. Judging from this score, and from the earlier Frank and Jesse (also on Intrada), McKenzie is a young composer who is well worth watching.
