Trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin leads this Dixieland date that focuses primarily on favorite spirituals. The lineup is a strong one, including bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Osie Johnson, pianist Dick Hyman (who doubles on organ), trombonist Lou McGarity, clarinetist Kenny Davern, and banjo player Lee Blair. Erwin's loose (though brief) arrangements leave room for interaction between the musicians, with everyone getting in their licks. About the only weak portion of the album is when Hyman switches to a rather wimpy sounding electric organ, which sounds rather reedy when compared to far better instruments he utilized on later recording sessions in the 1970s and thereafter. This long unavailable United Artists LP will have great appeal to Dixieland fans.
