AllMusic Review by

Deep Soul, Vol. 1 is a good budget-priced collection that contains 13 soul hits from the '70s. Nothing here is "deep soul" -- there are no punchy stax horns, Southern grooves or shouted vocals. Everything is smooth in the Philly-soul and Hi Records tradition, and as long as you know that coming into the collection, you won't be disappointed. Among the highlights on the collection are Chaka Khan's "You Got the Love," Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," King Floyd's "Groove Me," the Stylistics' "You're a Big Girl Now," Ronnie Dyson's "(If You Let Me Make Love to You) Then Why Can't I Touch You?," Al Wilson's "Show & Tell," the O'Jays' "You Got Your Hooks in Me," Minnie Ripperton's "Lovin' You" and Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly."
