Craig Ross' debut solo album Dead Spy Report boasts a weird array of styles and sounds. It's a place where pop melodies collide with folky song structures, and where acoustic guitars are fleshed out with bright, fuzzy guitars. Ross recorded the majority of the album by himself, but instead of having a claustrophobic, fussy atmosphere, Dead Spy Report is a fascinating listen, even when his songwriting becomes preoccupied with what he wants to say, instead of actually saying it. But those moments are rare -- for the most part, Ross has crafted an impressive debut album.
