Cover Me: Songs by Springsteen gathers famous and obscure renditions of Springsteen's songs, ranging from Patti Smith's revamped "Because the Night" to the Pointer Sisters' sensual version of "Fire." Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, a group already closely associated with Springsteen, turn in gritty versions of "The Fever," "Love on the Wrong Side of Town," and "Hearts of Stone," while the Hollies' "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)," Johnny Cash's "Johnny 99," and Gary "U.S." Bonds' "This Little Girl" are imbued with some of the artists' distinctive styles. The Beat Farmers, Greg Kihn, and the Reivers deliver worthwhile, faithful versions of Springsteen classics, all of which have aged surprisingly well since Cover Me was released in 1984, making this collection superior to many of the tribute albums that followed it.
