AllMusic Review by

Most people know Mark Borchardt's ultra-low-budget horror film Coven only from the alternately hilarious and heartbreaking documentary about its making, American Movie. However, that documentary was enough of a success that Patrick Nettesheim's score for Coven was released on CD. (Note that Borchardt's musician friend and comic foil Mike Schenk, American Movie's breakout star, did not compose the film's score, nor does he play on it.) The mostly synthesized score is appropriately gothic, with wordless female vocals adding welcome texture to the largely similar pieces. The 11 short sections (from barely a minute to nearly four-and-a-half) don't wear out their welcomes, but Nettesheim is roughly as gifted a composer as Borchardt is a director, and so the soundtrack to Coven, much like the film itself, is primarily a novelty of the interesting failure variety.
