Composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) and Canadian synth pop outfit Metric bring an ample amount of atmosphere and menace to director David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel, Cosmopolis. Similar in tone to Cliff Martinez's intoxicating work on 2011's Drive, Cosmopolis broods and bleats with obsessive, midnight precision, casting out wide nets of chilly instrumental electronica and fractured, David Lynch-ian fever pop -- Emily Haines turns in strong vocal performances on the ghostly "Long to Live" and "Call Me Home," switching to a full-on banshee wail for the pulsating "I Don't Want to Wake Up." Anxious, evocative, and occasionally grand, Shore and Metric are in full command of their powers here, resulting in one of the most engaging soundtracks of the year.
