AllMusic Review by

The Cornell Hurd Band's 1996 effort, Cool & Unusual Punishment, is chock-full of Texas swing, honky tonk, and frontman Hurd's ironic, humorous songcraft. Tracks like "Your Ex-Husband Sent Me Flowers ('Cause He Feels Sorry for Me)" are bolstered by grin-inducing lyrics and the ensemble's highly proficient, tight playing. The swinging opener, "I Don't Care What It Is That You Did When You Lived in Ft. Worth," is smothered in ringing rockabilly guitar, while the ballad "Cold Morning Light" is luxuriantly drawn out and punctuated with piano key flourishes and pedal steel. This Texas collective won't be coming to your town anytime soon (unless you live in Austin) because they don't tour. So you'll have to catch their top-notch work on albums such as this.
