Veteran Los Angeles-based drummer Chiz Harris leads a quartet/quintet (trumpeter Conte Candoli sits in on most of the tunes) through three standards and a trio of originals by pianist Joe Lettieri. Oddly enough tenorman Jay Migliori, who recalls both Hank Mobley and George Coleman on "Confirmation," "Speak Low" and "Mooney-Go-Round," plays in a Coltraneish style on the other half of the disc, almost as if he were two different musicians; bassist Isla Eckinger completes the group. All of the selections are long (over ten minutes apiece) and feature fine solo work, especially from Migliori and pianist Lettieri (who is most influenced by McCoy Tyner). Recorded during a nine-hour session with no second takes or overdubs, this is an excellent if little-known straightahead set.
