The fifth of six two-LP sets that reissue all of Charlie Barnet's Bluebird recordings from 1935-42 finds his "Cherokee" big band at its prime on such memorable numbers as "Pompton Turnpike," "Ring Dem Bells," "Southern Fried," "Redskin Rumba," "Charleston Alley" and "Little John Ordinary." With Bobby Burnet taking some fine trumpet solos, Bernie Privin impressive as lead trumpeter, the forgotten electric guitarist Bus Etri getting some spots and Barnet adding his distinctive voices on tenor, alto and soprano, this was one of the top swing bands of the era. All six volumes of this superb series are worth searching for, particularly Vols. 2, 3 and 5.
