James Horner's score for the Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster Commando is all too typical of the action movie genre. Never the subtlest composer to begin with, Horner pulls out all the stops here, creating a dense, unrelenting sensory assault that mirrors the senseless violence depicted onscreen. Employing gelatinous synthesizers, heavy metal drums, and shrieking strings, Commando is the musical equivalent of an Uzi, spraying bursts of ammunition without prejudice. Despite its ear-splitting intensity, it's ultimately interchangeable with dozens of other action scores, and recommended solely to serious aficionados of the genre.
