AllMusic Review by

The two-disc anthology COCKTAIL HOUR is essential for Marlene Dietrich fans, as it collects 28 extremely rare radio performances from the '30s and early '40s. All of Dietrich's most beloved material is here, from the opening set of songs from her breakthrough film THE BLUE ANGEL to a large sampling of the French and German torch songs which she sang fewer of as World War II transformed Dietrich-who became an American citizen in 1939-into a patriotic entertainer for the USO and other charitable organizations. Her trademark sultry, world-weary tone is at its finest throughout. While the recording quality is variable-these songs were clearly taken directly from the original acetates, and therefore can be quite noisy-the quality of the material is undeniable.
