Classic R&B is a very average compilation that positions itself somewhere between anthologizing classics and featuring other tunes that haven't been overexposed on dozens of other similar packages. Just like Soul in the '70s, another compilation released through St. Clair, there's a heavy emphasis on Philly Soul, including selections from MFSB ("Lay in Low"), the Manhattans ("Wish That You Were Mine"), the O'Jays ("Time to Get Down"), and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes ("Ebony Woman"). Other highlights come from Marvin Gaye ("My Love Is Waiting"), the Isley Brothers ("Brother Brother"), and Earth, Wind & Fire ("On Your Face"). This is clearly a budget title with little in the way of loving care put into the presentation.
