AllMusic Review by

Eight different small groups of Chicago-based jazz players from the mid-to-late '20s are represented on this sampler LP: Lovie Austin's Blues Serenaders, Preston Jackson's Uptown Band, John Williams's Synco Jazzers (with a young Mary Lou Williams on piano), Charles Pierce's Orchestra, Richard M. Jones's Jazz Wizards, Jimmy Blythe's Ragamuffins (with cornetist Freddie Keppard and clarinetist Johnny Dodds on "Messin' Around"), The Windy Rhythm Kings and Kansas City Frank's Footwarmers. Most of this music has been reissued in more complete form on CD but the Biograph album acts as a good introduction to this style of rough and ready '20s jazz.
