France's Café Concert style under its various names was as rooted in the urban working class as in English music hall, but it reached further into cafe society and produced international stars as the London music hall never did. Here are some great early moments -- major stars like Yvette Guilbert and Mistinguett and huge hits like Bruant's original "Auprés de Ma Blonde," but mostly earlier and more obscure names like Paul Lack, who influenced Chevalier and Felix Mayol (a song about the maxixe, a Brazilian dance introduced at the same time as the tango but without the staying power). The notes are rotten. (57:39)
