Perhaps it’s fortunate that Camp Rock 2 is subtitled “The Final Jam,” because everybody involved in this 2010 sequel to the 2008 Disney Channel favorite is sounding a little long in the tooth for such summertime shenanigans. Certainly the Jonas Brothers are far too successful to be singing such pro-forma bubblegum, but even the game, willing Demi Lovato is hamstrung by a set of songs written for a project that smacks of contractual obligation for all involved. The notable exception to the rule is Matthew “Mdot” Finley, a wannabe R&B impresario who clutters the soundtrack with his sub-Chris Brown crooning and digital replicas of analog synths, never managing to create a persona throughout all his commotion. Then again, not even the JoBros can give these heavy-handed cuts a snap; they come closest with the glammy groove of “Heart and Soul,” but all this is as stale, chewy, and flavorless as yesterday’s bubblegum.
