One of the more unique offerings from Tigerbeat6 -- which is saying something, considering its roster of quirky and experimental electronic artists -- C64: Massive Sidplay Party Mix is more than an hour's worth of music composed entirely on the Commodore 64's SID (Sound Interface Device) chip and mixed by DJ Brotha P Touch and Lesser. The chip's early-'80s technology, which includes three tone oscillators and rudimentary sampling capabilities, gives the album an 8-bit charm that's deceptively simple, spanning pixilated covers of 1980s and '90s pop, as well as original electro, drum 'n' bass, gabber and electro-pop. At once limited and widely expressive, C64: Massive Sidplay Party Mix is witty fun and equally at home at a LAN party or on the dancefloor.
