Finland's Amorphis is notorious for keeping fans waiting for extended periods between album releases, with only the occasional EP to see them through. At least the band has had the good manners to make certain these EPs are well worth the price of purchase, and Black Winter Day is a prime example. A perfect companion piece for Amorphis' breakthrough of a year earlier, the landmark Tales from the Thousand Lakes, this four-song EP is led off by the excellent title track, which was possibly said album's absolute highlight. A short keyboard piece, "Folk of the North," is up next, and is then followed by "Moon and Sun," whose two parts are both as good as anything heard on Tales. Highly recommended for serious fans.
