Billboard: Top Soft Rock Hits 1974 is another thoroughly entertaining collection of soft-rock singles from the early '70s. Some of these songs function as just pure kitsch or nostalgia (Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun," Frankie Valli's "My Eyes Adored You," Neil Sedaka's "Laughter in the Rain"), while others turn out to be genuinely strong pop songs (the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Carly Simon's "Haven't Got Time for the Pain," Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors"), but both stripes of songs capture the era quite well. While the collection may be unnecessarily brief, it's nevertheless a good bargain as a budget-line disc.
