A collection of contemporary Jamaican dancehall tracks that reflects the pervasive influence of hip-hop, Best of Reggae Hip Hop Remixes is a surprisingly cohesive set of songs that manages to hint at rap, but remains completely and utterly Jamaican in feel and outlook. Highlights include the opening track, "Badman Knowledge," by Capleton, which features an ominous synthesized string arrangement (a trick that pops up in several of the songs here), Beenie Man's vibrant "Gal Dem We Love"; "Vampire" by Yami Bolo, who brings his usual politically conscious roots stance to the ball; and the wonderful "Bought & Sold" by Ghost, which samples the lyrics of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." In the end, what is here is much more dancehall than hip-hop, but there is enough synthesis going on to make this an extremely interesting compilation.
