The front of Best of #1 Soul Hits of the 1970s notes that the songs are "New Stereo Recordings by the Original Artists," and the track list on the back even notes which selections were recorded live. Credit the KRB label for being honest about the contents of their releases; many lousy labels release compilations consisting of re-recordings and live versions but neglect to inform the consumer in any way. There's no substituting for the originals, of course, but this disc does have unembarrassing looks at Al Wilson's "Show and Tell" and Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia." The remainder is rather poor to just plain awful.
