Recorded late in the careers of both Ben Webster and Buck Clayton, this CD represents the old guard at its best. Posthumously released, these tracks all show the depth and grace of both artists. Webster's thick yet airy tone and Clayton's tart, melodic dexterity have become swing era trademarks.
On BEN AND BUCK, a live concert recording from the Antwerp Jazz Club in 1967, these approaches to jazz are poignantly evoked. It is especially touching to hear Webster play a ballad such as "My Romance," or Clayton invoke that rare Kansas City blues style that is altogether extinct nowadays. Highlights include "Our Love is Here to Stay," "How Long Has This Been Going On," the aforementioned "My Romance," and Clayton's bluesy solo on "B-Flat Blues." For straight up, no frills standards, loaded with jazz roots, BEN AND BUCK is an excellent collection.
