To say Wanda Jackson was arguably the finest female singer to emerge from the first wave of rock & roll is to limit her -- Jackson was one of the very best singers in rock & roll and rockabilly, period, blessed with a powerful voice that was still capable of wild rave-ups and fine nuance, as well as boasting excellent phrasing and shrewd instincts about how to handle a wide variety of musical styles. During her tenure with Capitol Records, Jackson cut many of her finest and hardest-rockin' sides, and Before the Music Died: The Complete Recordings 1954-1962 features in full the five albums Jackson recorded for Capitol during the period: Wanda Jackson, Rockin' with Wanda!, There's a Party Goin' On, Right or Wrong, and Wonderful Wanda. In addition, the set includes 36 non-LP single sides Jackson cut for Decca and Capitol. While this collection runs the gamut from frantic rockabilly to countrypolitan material, Jackson sounds impressive whatever she tackles, and this box set features plenty of inspired moments from the Queen of Rockabilly (and lots more, too).
